Alaska ProStart Management and Culinary Teams Place 11th and 25th in the National ProStart Invitational

Mat-Su Career and Technical High School and Chugiak High School students Compete at National Culinary and Management Competition

Alaska ProStart is proud to announce that the Mat-Su Career and Technical High School and Chugiak High School took 25th and 11th (respectively) at the 14th Annual National ProStart Invitational, held at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, California. The culinary team competed against 48 teams and the management team competed against 41 teams from across the United States, U.S. territories, and DoD schools. At the national competition, hosted by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, the top five teams from both the culinary and management competitions were awarded over a $1,000,000 in scholarships to pursue a college education.

“ProStart is developing the best and brightest talent into tomorrow’s industry leaders.  We are very proud of our teams success,” said Amber Novak, Director of Education Programs and ProStart Coordinator for Alaska.  “ProStart is changing their lives and helping them on the path to success in the hospitality and tourism industry.”

The culinary competition highlights the creative abilities of each team through the preparation of a three-course meal in 60 minutes using only two butane burners.  Management teams develop a proposal for an original restaurant concept and apply critical thinking skills to challenges restaurant managers face in day-to-day operations.  The performance of teams in both the culinary and management events is observed and rated by expert judges from industry and academia.

The Mat-Su Career and Technical High culinary team was accompanied by their educator, Michael Graham. Culinary team members include Jennika Conway, Claire East, Sara Ladner, Patrick Forman, and Avery Ballais.  The students were mentored by Carolyn Frey, who previously taught ProStart at the school. The Chugiak High management team was accompanied by their educator, Kathy Vik. The management team members include Jordan Kesler, Michelle Eliassen, Julia Turner, and Kamryn Froehle. The team was mentored by Michelle Smith, from Anchorage’s Snow City Café and Robert Kilby from Simon & Seaforts. Each student on both teams received over $49,000 in scholarship offerings at the Alaska ProStart Invitational in January from the Art Institute, Culinary Institute of America, Johnson & Wales, Louisiana Culinary Institute, the New England Culinary Institute, the Chef’s Academy, Le Cordon Bleu, Indiana University, the Mississippi University for Women, the Culinard, and Sullivan University.

ProStart – the NRAEF’s proven, high-impact program for high school students – reaches more than 100,000 students in 1,700 high schools across 44 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and U.S. military bases. It introduces them to the career opportunities available in the restaurant and foodservice industry, and teaches them the restaurant management and culinary arts skills needed to launch their futures.  In Alaska, over 600 students are served by ProStart and supported by the Alaska CHARR Educational Fund.

ProStart is a two-year educational program supported by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation in partnership with state restaurant associations. The career-building program blends classroom learning with mentored work experience to teach high school students the management and culinary skills needed for a career in the restaurant and foodservice industry. When students meet academic standards, complete a checklist of competencies, and work at least 400 hours in the industry, they are awarded the ProStart National Certificate of Achievement that signifies they are well qualified to enter the industry workforce.
